Abstract

This study deals with the history of the Department of Surface and Plasma Science of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the Charles University, which in the academic year 2023/2024 celebrates 70 years since its foundation. In the course of its existence, its name changed twice. Originally, it was founded in 1953 as the Department of High Frequencies and Vacuum Technology. In 1959, its name changed to the Department of Electronics and Vacuum Physics, and since 2006, it has its current name. This text focuses especially on this department's history during the rule of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, i.e., in 1953-1989.
